The Ancient Way
On Scenic Route 53

New Mexico's scenic Route 53, The Ancient Way, was the traditional route between the Pueblos of Zuni & Acoma. Along this path, came the Zuni, the Hopi and Acoma and all of the other Pueblo traders and travelers. It was also the route taken by Coronado's expedition. The conquistadors came along looking for treasure, attempting to conquer. The Cavalry and settlers also traveled the route on journeys west. Through ancient villages, finding crucial waters, sandstone landmarks, on to cross the Divide then along the malpais, this route guided traders, explorers and adventurers for over a thousand years and still does. Today, Route 53 is one of New Mexico's most scenic and historic drives. Discover this scenic byway and explore the treasures of this Ancient Way and join us at the 5th annual Ancient Way Fall Festival on Scenic Route 53, October 1 - 10, 2004.
